Which size bed and mattress is right for you?

Most people are aware that the softness or firmness of a mattress will affect the quality of your sleep.
But many still don’t realise that when it comes to beds, size also matters.
With up to 10 mattress sizes available in the UK (including Euro sizes), choosing the ideal mattress for your bed frame, bedroom size and your own height isn’t always as simple as it seems.
Here, we’ll show you some of the variables you need to think about to help you pick the right bed size for you.
Size matters…sometimes
You can be forgiven if you think that there are only three adult bed sizes - single, double and king size.
In fact, there are actually a total of 10 different bed sizes.
This might make it easier to buy a mattress that's exactly right for you, but it also increases the risk of buying one that doesn’t fit your bed frame, bedding or room.
And remember that while a larger mattress size may help you sleep, it won't help anywhere near as much as buying a smaller mattress that provides you with the optimum level of support for your body size and sleeping position.
Below are some of the main bed sizes to look out for:
Small single bed
The smallest adult bed size you can buy, this is also known as a narrow single mattress.
The small single measures 75 x 190cm - so it’s the same length as a standard single (and long enough for most adults) but 15cm narrower.
Often used for children, they’re also an option to help turn studies or box rooms into small guest bedrooms.
Standard single bed
The standard single bed is the fourth most popular mattress size in the country.
It’s 90cm wide x 190cm tall, meaning there should be comfortably enough space for a single adult to roll into different sleeping positions - unless you’re significantly taller or broader than average.
A standard single bed is effectively the size against which all others are measured.
Small double (Queen size)
Despite what many people believe, a queen-size bed is actually smaller than a double.
The queen-size is still the same length as a standard double, but is 15cm narrower - that’s why it’s sometimes known in the trade as a small double.
Measuring 120 x 190cm, two adults might find a queen-size mattress fairly ‘snug’, but if you sleep alone and like to stretch out or have a small bedroom, it could be a better option than a standard single bed.
Standard double
A standard double mattress measures 135 x 190cm and is the second most popular mattress size in the UK
They’re sufficiently long and wide to fit two average-sized adults, but there might not be much wiggle room.
If you’re larger than average or a restless sleeper, you may need a slightly larger mattress than a standard double, provided your bedroom and bed frame can accommodate it.
King size
King size beds are the most popular in the UK and are widely available.
A king size bed is 150 x 200cm, and while a king size is usually a little more expensive than a standard double, it provides you with a lot more sleeping space.
It appears that the king size bed is the country’s number one choice!
Super king
A super king mattress measures 180 x 200cm and is essentially the size of two standard single mattresses joined together.
Some super king mattresses are actually just that - with some couples now choosing two singles zipped together to form a super king.
This option means that each individual can select the level of firmness and support that suits them.
