What is a pocket sprung mattress?
Pocket sprung mattresses contain a mass of individual springs, each sewn into its own section of fabric. The main advantage of this being the springs work independently of one another, meaning - similar to memory foam - the mattress's surface is able to mold to your ideal sleeping position.
Are pocket sprung mattresses better than memory foam mattresses?
Both pocket sprung and memory foam mattresses are able to mould to your body's natural contours but do so in different ways. A memory foam mattress relies on your body's heat to change the mattresses' shape whereas the springs within a pocket spring move independently to match your ideal sleeping position.
Pocket sprung mattresses generally provide more firmness whilst allowing more for your body to be able to breathe making them a good option for people who struggle to keep cool on hot summer nights.
Are more pocket springs in a mattress better?
Whilst it is logical to think that a higher spring count means greater support, this is not always the case. Build quality and methods of construction can mean that a 1000 pocket sprung mattress can be superior to one that has twice this amount. Similarly, the tension of a mattress or bed is not always defined by the number of pocket springs contained within it. Whether the base has springs, slats, or is a platform top will also have an effect as will the thickness of the wire used to make the spring and the number of turns inside.
What is the difference between open spring and pocket spring?
An open coil mattress is usually a cheaper and more lightweight option, consisting of individual springs connected and lined together within a wired frame whereas pocket sprung mattresses contain individual springs, each sewn into their own section of fabric pockets providing a medium-firm sleeping surface. Open spring mattresses are good for staying cool in bed and are easier to turn but provide less support to pressure points - especially for side sleepers - and are not able to match your body shape as effectively.
